The Allure of Art with Concrete
We all know that concrete is durable and a non combustible material. Those two material properties combined with endless shapes and infinite colors truly make concrete the best material for a fireplace surround. Add in a concrete artisan who loves to sculpt and create new things…then you have this bougie fireplace surround.

The Process of making the Bougiest Concrete Fireplace Surround
- The Idea: I had made some sculptural concrete mirror frames in white and I cast them right side up and hand sculpted them. It was a soothing process, to be more hands on with the concrete and sculpting it. I have been really into making concrete fireplace surrounds lately and I thought that making an entirely hand sculpted one would be a huge but fun challenge.
- Planning: Concrete has its limitations because it will get hard and not give a lot of time to work with it. I wanted this concrete fireplace surround to be one of the largest statement pieces I have ever made. I knew that I could not cast all the concrete at the same time as there are limitations of my own ability to work for extreme lengths of time. I planned the main concrete structure to be poured the day before the outside part that would be hand sculpted. I also had to make the inner mold as I did not want this to be completely solid.
- Execution: As this concrete fireplace surround was not specifically for a customer, I had to find time in my work schedule to be able to make it. I also knew that I would need help as this was simply too much work to do by myself. I was able to pour the inner mold by myself then when that was hard the next day, I had a helper mix the concrete to the right consistency while I hand sculpted the rest. It was a very exhausting and messy process but I was extremely pleased with the result.
- Curing and Sealing: The outer sculpted concrete was starting to set rapidly and we had to start covering it before we were even finished. The concrete cured for 16 hours then I sealed it with Ovation Gloss from the Concrete Countertop Institute. I rarely use the gloss sealer but for anything that I make that is concrete art, it is my absolute favorite sealer!
